Francis Newton Souza (b.1924 d.2002)

Selected Works on Paper from the Artist's Estate

The Mother-Child theme reverberated through Souza's life: he often spoke and wrote about his relationship with his own mother. The estate has a number of works on this subject including a large pieta (oil on canvas, 216.36 x 248.92 cm) painted in 1987, the year of his mother's death. The child in this rendering is clearly precocious and sexual. Or perhaps it is Souza's self-referntial humour to his short stature, which, nonetheless, never seemed to prevent him from measuring up to the tall women with whom he frequently associated, and sometimes married!
