Francis Newton Souza (b.1924
d.2002) |

Souza's early works on paper exhibit his strength as a colourist and figurative painter from a young age. Also, themes and images quintessentially "Souza" can be found in his work from the beginning; subjects he began exploring as a student and remained fascinated with throughout his life. Some of Souza's early works on paper are also identifiable landscapes of his birthplace, Goa. He captures the whitewashed houses and red roofs strung out along the red clay soil; and in the water surrounding the islands, the fishermen's boats often on the horizon, sometimes directly the subject. Souza primarily used coloured inks, gouache, watercolour and pvc (pre-acrylic paint) in his works on paper during the forties and early fifties although the estate has some early work that is oil on paper.
