"Renaissance painters painted men and women making them look like angels. I paint for angels to show them what men and women really look like."

Like all great artists, Souza surrounded himself with work that was important to him, that he had no intention of selling. One of the Bose Pacia partners, the New York dealers and gallery owners who exhibited Souza's work in New York from 1998, commented that the room where several of the paintings were stored was without light when they first went to visit Souza with the proposition of an exhibition; and that he probably wanted it that way so that people would not be able to see exactly what work he had. In the apartment, work was stored in every nook and cranny, including a collection of early drawings on large paper, which were wrapped in a blanket and hidden under his bed. More
