Francis Newton Souza (b.1924

The painting on this page was clearly a work Souza intended to keep. Marked "not for sale" on the back, it travelled with him first from India to England in 1949 then from England to America in 1967. Images of Christ--suffering and saintly, sometimes iconoclastically sexual--predominated Souza's work throughout his life. He made images of Christ directly and indirectly often using Christ's visage in self-portraits. Souza identified with Christ's wounds and cruxifixion, and expressed his kinship with this universal figure of humanity through paintings, drawings and works on paper, and in his writings.
